There is
an estimated Gross Potential of 45,000 MW & Technical Potential of
13,000 MW in India
Considerable progress has been made in harnessing the large wind
power potential available in the country. Most of the projects
have been s tarred in Coastal areas of Tamilnadu and Hilly Areas
of Maharashtra. During the last five years Rajasthan has emerged
as the favorite destination for private sector Wind Mills due to
friendly renewable energy policy and good wind potential.
New initiatives have been taken in Jharkhand to assess the Wind
Quality with the objective of producing electricity from Wind. Two
High Masts, with the help of Center for Wind Energy Technology,
Chennai, have been erected at Netarhat and Latehar to monitor and
assess the wind speed and quality. The data will be available by
October,2005 to indicate whether Wind Mills can be installed at
these locations.
Large private sector corporations, public sector units and power
utilities are being motivated to set up wind power projects.
Wind
resource Map is given below (w/m2 = Watt per square meter):
Installation:
-
India
now has the 5th largest wind power installed capacity in the world
which has reached 1870 MW.
-
1805
MW of the total installed capacity has come through commercial
projects.
-
About
11.8 billion units of electricity have been fed to various State grids
from Wind power projects.
